The first Captain was Maurice Nicholson, who got
the Society up and running at the prompting of Pat Cooney. The first
outing was held in Killeen Golf Club, Kill, Co. Kildare on Friday,
24th May 1996.
The first seven Captains have been involved since
the start. In addition, Mick Glennon has acted as Secretary or Treasurer
for most of those years, while Shay Daly took over as Handycap Secretary
and Tom Malone lent his support.
Our first Golf Classic in Newlands was scheduled for
14th September 2001 – three days after the horrific disaster
in New York. The day was declared a national day of mourning and
the outing was obviously postponed. Although it was subsequently
held on 5th October, many could not make it on the day, resulting
in it not being as successful as planned.
There was a lull thereafter as efforts were concentrated
on the development of the all-weather pitch, until the Society was
resurrected in June 2003 as Noel Synnott took over the Captaincy.
The 2006 Committee below (from left): Noel Synnott;
Colm O Marnain; Barry Warren; Tommy O'Connor; Mick Elliott; David
Spring.
